10th January 2008

Hammersmith based company, Espresso Education won a special ‘Inclusion’ award last night (Wednesday 9 January, 2008) at the BETT Awards, part of the world’s largest technology in education show.
The annual BETT Awards represent a partnership between Becta, the Government’s lead agency for ICT in education, BESA, the trade association representing the educational supply industry and Emap Education, the organisers of BETT – the largest educational technology show in the world.
The awards encourage and recognise outstanding education sector resources and learning solutions. Judges found ‘Espresso Education’s’ ‘Espresso Primary: Sustainability module in collaboration with the World Wildlife Fund’ learning resource was of the highest calibre when judged against the key criteria of design, cost-effectiveness, support of higher order thinking skills and effective learning and teaching styles. The technical criteria against which the awards were judged focused on the robustness and resilience of each product, and its accessibility for those with specific needs.
The ‘Inclusion’ Award highlights the importance of considering the issue of inclusion when developing new products and was judged among all those products entered into the Awards this year. It is designed to reward products that provide broad flexibility so they can be used with as wide a range of learners as possible and support learners with widely different needs - those who are very able as well as those who have specific difficulties.
Lewis Bronze, CEO Espresso Education, commented; “Winning the BETT Inclusion Award recognises the essence of Espresso's purpose - which is simply to create the best resources to stimulate engagement, creativity and achievement in all learners, whatever their needs and abilities. The Award is a tribute to our dedicated Espresso production team who are constantly refining and developing their practice to produce such an outstanding and ever-evolving service.”
Colin Penfold, Director of Partnerships and Commissioning, Becta and joint chair of judging said: "Technology has enormous potential to improve teaching and learning. These awards demonstrate and recognise the excellent work being carried out to harness this power of technology in education. Well-designed resources used effectively help learners to achieve their full potential. The winners should be congratulated for their innovative resources, which are undoubtedly helping to transform education.”
Ray Barker, director, BESA and Joint Chair of Judging added: “The winners are all contributing to raising the standards of learning resources. Each ensures that BETT and the UK ICT industry continue to be recognised as the best in the world.
The quality of these learning resources is a testament to business’ operating within the UK education sector.”
