25th October 2002

Les Sports resource bank
New video-rich and multi-media French resources for KS3 Secondary pupils in Year 9 address the QCA French Scheme of Work 13.

The Espresso Education stand (B82) - in its new location on the ground floor at BETT 2003 - will be a goldmine of brand new resources, with the company launching innovative modules for nursery and reception classes right up to GCSE pupils. In a clear demonstration of how the Espresso service continues to expand and evolve, brand new resources covering much of the curriculum (including RE, PE, Maths, Art and Design, History, French, and PSHE and Citizenship) will be on show.

Produced in partnership with the London Grid for Learning, Faiths is a completely original work including specially filmed video covering Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism, Christianity, and Judaism. Espresso will launch the first module at BETT 2003. The truly unique video-rich resource consists of an integrated electronic library of local resources with substantial video content and carefully researched websites featuring the basic tenets of each religion, cultural traditions and religious observance in London communities. Filmed and produced in the London area, this module meets many of the requirements of the QCA Schemes of work for Religious Education at Key Stage 2. The remaining five modules will be added during 2003.

Espresso addresses a significant gap in the market by unveiling new resources to help deliver the PE theory curriculum at GCSE. Espresso's first GCSE-level work has been filmed on location with Hartlepool teachers and learners, and is made in partnership with Hartlepool City Learning Centre. This extensive resource bank supports the QCA Scheme of work for PE, and contains extensive video and multimedia coverage of themes like Healthy Living, Human Body and Sport and Society. The PE resource is available either as part of the Espresso service for Secondary schools, or as a networked CD-ROM.

Espresso will also be launching two other brand new Key Stage 2 resources covering Maths and Art & Design. Real Life Maths encourages pupils to complete problem solving activities using video that stimulates learning and understanding of mathematical principles. Concepts like area, measure and time are explored imaginatively through everyday situations to which pupils can relate. Exploring Sculpture - the very first Espresso resource for Art and Design - features the lives and work of artists Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, and is being made in partnership with Wakefield Education Action Zone.

Espresso will also launch Foundation modules for pupils aged three to five years old. Seven modules covering the alphabet and numbers will be on show for those who teach at nursery and reception level, and should be of particular interest in the light of the new Foundation Pupil Profiling which is being introduced.

Completing the highly acclaimed 20th Century Archive resource, BETT 2003 will see the unveiling of the final two decades - the 1920s and the 1930s. This invaluable Key Stage 2 History resource with its tremendous video archive covering each decade was first launched at BETT 2002, and has since seen the rest of the century added over the course of the year. The module is designed to aid chronological understanding of events, people and change in the last century. Bringing to life major historical events of the last century, with over sixty high-quality video clips, pupils are able to examine authentic documentation such as ration books and observe clips and video footage of the events that have shaped our own lives. Video clips include historic moments such as Neil Armstrong stepping on to the Moon's surface, Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee (some of the earliest moving pictures ever filmed), and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.

New for KS3 Secondary pupils are resource banks in French and Citizenship/PSHE. Aimed at French teachers and their students in Year Nine, La Santé covers the use of the imperative form and the perfect tense, addressing the QCA French Scheme of Work 13. The module contains video and multimedia engaging pupils in subjects such as common ailments, body parts and a visit to the doctor.

Espresso's acclaimed Citizenship resources are being further extended with the launch of the new module Smoking, examining the reasons that young people start smoking, and why they find it difficult to stop. The 'Fact & Opinion' quiz tests common misconceptions about the habit and stimulates debate on subjects such as 'Should children be given nicotine patches?' Espresso Education is supporting teachers in their first year of teaching Citizenship as a compulsory subject at Key Stage 3 by sending eight video and multimedia modules on Citizenship topics free of charge to every secondary school in England.
