Espresso delivers CD-ROM for GCSE PE in conjunction with Hartlepool City Learning Centre

24th May 2002

Extending its innovative 'Your Espresso' range into secondary schools, BETT award-winner Espresso Education has launched a Physical Education GCSE resource on CD-ROM. Developed in association with Hartlepool City Learning Centre, the resource is the first ever 'standalone' module available from Espresso, whose standard service is delivered via satellite to subscribing schools.

This latest addition to Espresso's growing portfolio is divided into the four sections of the PE syllabus: Human Body, Healthy Living, Training and Sport and Society, and incorporates lesson resources that are based on current and topical television programmes and news reports supported by relevant websites, interactive tasks, differentiated test papers and issues to stimulate debate.

Jean Rowton, Senior Producer, Espresso Education, said:

This module is an essential resource for all schools and colleges teaching PE at GCSE level. The unique aspect of Espresso, and indeed this module, is that it utilises resources which stimulate pupils such as video and websites, which can be used alongside traditional teaching methods.

The module is fully indexed to the National Curriculum and has a 'Staffroom' that guides teachers through its resources and shows how each one fulfills the requirements in the GCSE PE syllabus. Like the resources on Espresso's subscription-based Secondary Service, it also has a Homework site which incorporates printable test papers and links to relevant live websites so teachers and pupils have all the Internet searching done for them.

Colin Scott, Centre Manager, Hartlepool City Learning Centre, added:

There was a definite need for a resource of this kind as existing GCSE Physical Education ICT resources are definitely lacking. Hartlepool City Learning Centre was delighted to take part in the making of this resource and we are thrilled with the outcome.

Jonathan Crone, Head of PE, Dyke House School, Hartlepool, said:

This CD-ROM is specific to the syllabus and to the interests of our pupils and will stimulate learning; it is the most motivating resource I have come across for GCSE PE. It covers topic areas very well and even gives extension work to our most able pupils. It should make planning lessons much easier.

Espresso's 'Your Espresso' modules offer Local Education Authorities (LAs) and Education Action Zones (EAZs) the opportunity to create truly unique video-rich resources that stimulate learning amongst children and support teachers. Other 'Your Espresso' schemes that have either been completed or are in production include projects in Birmingham, Plymouth, Bristol, Corby, Beamish Museum and Sunderland. Any LA or EAZ can apply to have a 'Your Espresso' module created for their schools. It can either take the form of an add-on module for those subscribing to Espresso's broadband service, or can be delivered on CD-ROM for non-subscribers.
