Espresso encourages Sunderland pupils to 'Go On And Learn' with its latest 'Your Espresso' module created in conjunction with Sunderland FC and Sunderland EAZ

24th May 2002

Produced in conjunction with Sunderland Football Club and Sunderland Education Action Zone (EAZ), Go On And Learn is the latest resource from the 'Your Espresso' range, the service from Espresso Education which enables Local Education Authorities (LAs) and EAZs to create truly unique video-rich resources that stimulate learning amongst children and support teachers. Using football as a stimulus, the resource has been designed to help motivate pupils and improve literacy and numeracy in the 16 primary schools within Sunderland EAZ.

Filmed at the home of Sunderland Football Club - 'The Stadium of Light' - the resource contains over 35 minutes of full-screen, high-quality video including interviews with the team manager, team coach and a local sports reporter as well as video footage of Sunderland's Premiership match against Charlton. Football was chosen as the subject matter of this latest 'Your Espresso' on account of its ability to motivate the children in the area. Sunderland Football Club is extremely family-orientated and has a large percentage of family season ticket holders.

Go On And Learn (GOAL) is divided into three sub-sections - Match day, Stadium and Football Community. Within each of these categories are five video sequences accompanied by related activities, designed to encourage literacy and numeracy. Tasks include letter writing, creating diaries, writing newspaper reports, calculation in the ticket and souvenir shop and journey times for travelling fans. The articles, ranging from newspapers, tables of results and plans of the stadium, are available for teachers to use in the classroom, all created in HTML enabling them to be copied and pasted for use on a PC or printed onto paper for use away from the computer. There is also an extensive photograph resource bank that can be used for storyboards.

Linda Anderson, Head teacher, Witherwack Primary School, Sunderland, said:

Football is an important part of out local community and appeals to both boys and girls. We are delighted that it has been chosen as a key motivator for learning. These materials will enable children to access key skills in literacy and numeracy and help restore some of the fun into learning. We are really looking forward to using Go On And Learn in school.

Jean Rowton, Senior Producer, Espresso Education, said:

We are thrilled to be presenting this totally unique resource. By using football as the subject, we have produced something that will ignite enthusiasm in pupils and motivate them to improve literacy and numeracy levels.

Any LA or EAZ can apply to have a Your Espresso created for their schools. It can either take the form of an add-on module for those subscribing to the 'Espresso for Primary Schools' broadband service, or can be delivered on CD-ROM for non-subscribers.
