** EDUCATION SHOW 2002 PREVIEW ** - Espresso showcases new 20th Century Archive and its Secondary service

23rd January 2002

STAND CI22, EDUCATION SHOW 2002, NEC, BIRMINGHAM
7 - 9 MARCH 2002

Showcasing on stand CI22 will be the latest addition to Espresso Education's award-winning Espresso for Primary Schools service: 20th Century Archive - a brand new Key Stage 2 History resource which brings to life major historical events of the last century. Also on the stand, Espresso will be showing the newly-launched service for Secondary Schools as well as Story Starts - a Primary schools service resource that combines real-life video stories with supporting photos and activity worksheets.

With over sixty high-quality video clips, 20th Century Archive is designed to aid chronological understanding of events, people and change in the last century. The Archive is divided into decades and includes topics such as man walking on the moon (1960s) and the Blitz (1940s). Within each decade, sub-sections look in more detail at topics including fashion, famous people and transport of the time. The 'Find out more' section features worksheets, quizzes and word games along with links to other relevant websites. Pupils are able to examine authentic documentation such as ration books, and can observe clips and video footage of the events that have shaped our past.

Also at this year's Education Show, Espresso will be introducing its groundbreaking Secondary service. Following on from the hugely successful Primary School service - now used by more than 450 subscribing schools in 40 LAs across the country - the new Secondary service incorporates high quality video footage, multimedia activities, worksheets and websites accompanied by detailed teacher support notes.

Espresso for Secondary Schools

Targeted at Key Stage 3 pupils, the cartoon characters found in the original primary school service have been replaced with animated teachers who guide students through subject areas. Espresso has created resource banks covering English, French and PSHE. There is also a full Homework service, designed for narrowband connection, enabling students to access it over the web from home.

Lesson resources are based around current and topical television programmes and news reports. The video is supported by related websites, interactive activities and differentiated paper-based extension activities. Teachers are offered curriculum support materials in the Staffroom site, accessible through the pupil's service and the Espresso web site.

Also appearing in full at the show will be Story Starts, a Primary schools service resource that combines real-life video stories with supporting photos and activity worksheets. This latest module imaginatively combines 16 news video stories with Early Years curriculum objectives. Story Starts covers four genres: Adventure, Funny, Scary and Amazing. Stories include 'The Hamster With a Bus Pass' (Funny), 'Ghost Hunt at The Royal Albert Hall' (Scary), 'Buried Treasure' (Amazing) and the 'Flying Sheepdog' (Adventure). Each video is accompanied by activities that support the Literacy Framework, ranging from interactive storybooks to word games.

Featured for the first time will also be a valuable addition to the Espresso Staffroom - a helpful guide to how Espresso supports the Numeracy framework listing the resources within the service that can be used to teach the objectives with links to the relevant modules.
